This article critically examines the persistence of gender stereotypes in Iranian women’s cinema across the 1980s, 1990s, and 2020s, exploring how these portrayals intersect with the socio-political and cultural transformations of the era. While women filmmakers have played a pivotal role in shaping Iranian cinema, this study highlights the ongoing reproduction of traditional gender roles despite significant societal changes. Through a qualitative content analysis of works by notable filmmakers such as Rakhshān Banī E‘temād, Tahmineh Mīlānī, and Manījeh Ḥekmat, the article delves into the depiction of women’s autonomy, agency, and evolving roles in response to societal shifts. Attention is given to dialogues, key scenes, and character development to critically assess whether these portrayals challenge or reinforce entrenched stereotypes.

Despite advancements in discourse surrounding women’s rights and societal change, the findings indicate that gender stereotypes remain deeply embedded in women’s cinema, shaped by structural industry pressures and cultural constraints. The article advocates for continued critical engagement with women’s filmmaking practices to encourage more nuanced and realistic portrayals of women. Such an approach not only enhances the authenticity of cinematic narratives but also contributes to reshaping public perceptions of women’s roles, fostering a more inclusive and progressive cinematic landscape in Iran.
