The Portray of Iranian Women Athletes and Fans in the Cinema
Listen to this article
In this article, I examine four movies, Offside, Cold Sweat, Hair, and Orca, to discuss how these movies address several central themes in women's sports in Iran, including gender segregation in sports spaces, the socio-cultural constructed image of "proper" athlete woman, and the policy of the representation of the nation by women athletes in hejab. I discuss the dynamics between the restricting politics of women's sports and women's challenges and their different ways of resistance, as depicted in these movies, in multiple personal, social, religious, and political layers. While the themes in these movies overlap, each movie focuses on some of the issues in more detail. This article bridges the topics of cinema, women/gender, and sports in the context of Iran.
