Khisht va āyīnah

Released in 1964, Khisht va āyīnah (Brick and Mirror) is one of Ibrāhīm Gulistān’s feature films. A prominent Iranian filmmaker and literary figure, Gulistān was also producer on films such as Marjān (1965) and Forugh Farrokhzad’s Khānah siyāh ast (The House is Black; 1962). Khisht va āyīna is a dramatic film following the story of Hāshīm, played by Zakarīyā Hāshimī, a taxi driver who notices that his young passenger, played by Forugh Farrokhzad, has abandoned her baby in the back seat. The film also follows the parallel story of Hāshīm and his girlfriend, Tājī, played by Tājī Ahmadī, as they quarrel over what to do with the abandoned baby. Khisht va āyīna is a piece of Gulistān’s cinematic heritage and, in September 2018, was restored and presented at the 75th Venice International Film Festival as part of the Venezia Classici section, along with a selection of the best restored classic films from around the world.
