Ali Gholipour

Ali Gholipour is a cultural historian of modern Iran. His unconventional approach to the archives of Iranian arts and literature challenges assumed dualities between popular and high arts, states and intellectuals. Gholipour’s 2017 book, Cultivation of Public Taste in the Pahlavi Era (Tehran: Nazar), examined cultural programming in mid-twentieth-century Iran and the understudied role of state intellectuals in the tandem development of pop art and avant-garde modernism. More recently, He has been working on archival documents of censorship in the Qajar and Pahlavi periods to examine the role of states in the modernization of the Persian language.
