Mahshid Modares

Mahshid Modares is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and researcher. As of Spring 2025, she has received seven awards for her social documentaries and nineteen accolades for her research. Additionally, she has served as a juror for various visual arts contests, logo competitions, art history symposiums, and film awards. Notably, she was a member of the Peabody Awards Screening Committee for the Interactive and Immersive Media categories. Modares earned her B.F.A. in Visual Arts from Azad University in Tehran, followed by an M.A. in History of Art and Visual Culture from San Jose State University. Her thesis, titled “Qajar Painting in the Second Half of the Nineteenth Century and Realism,” was nominated for the Best Thesis Award in 2006. She also holds an M.F.A. in Social Documentation from the University of California, Santa Cruz. The revised version of her thesis documentary won four awards and was nominated for the Webby Awards in 2022. Currently, Modares is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Film and Digital Media at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
