Fereydoun Rahnama was one of the forerunners of New Wave cinema in Iran. He stood as a modernist filmmaker, channelling his intellectual and cultural convictions into his cinematic creations. In this article, the focal point is Rahnama’s debut feature film, Siavash dar Takht-e Jamshid (Siavash in Persepolis,1946). The film is about Siavash, a mythical and tragic figure in Iranian culture, and is characterised by its formalistic and post-modern approach, as well as its meta-cinematic perspective.
